SELF CENTERED TEENAGER
As a part of the current teenage generation, I am commonly viewed by society as selfish and self-absorbed. My experience has not been easy, and the adults around us brush it off as a shift in hormones or a plea for attention. This contradicts my belief that teenagers, such as myself, are still trying to figure out how to deal with the period of transition between childhood and adulthood, where many struggles either arise or are intensified. My artwork challenges that idea of teenage self-centeredness. Within my work, I react and express my life, my identity, and my struggles to use egotism to my advantage. My body and emotions not only define me but guide me as the fountain of creativity that supports all of my work. I explore self-portraiture, not only by illustrating my face but by exploring what aspects of my life makeup who I am. Self-portraiture provides me with a sense of identity and a way to work through my problems and express myself to other people. My artwork shows the fear, the anger, the unknown, and the struggle so many other teenagers and I are battling alone. I hope my body of work sheds light on the hardships that are so often pushed into the darkness. As a student, teenager, and artist, my artwork speaks to my eccentricity, reclaiming the label that society has put on me and shining a new light on it.
